What do you love most about the forgotten grapes? They are just as delicious if not more than the standard varietals you commonly see around. Owner: Martha Stoumen

Winemaker: Martha Stoumen

About: Martha Stoumen Wines was founded upon the desire to recapture a farming and winemaking culture that has all but faded away: a winemaking culture of patience. Our wines are made from unexpected varietals and offer new takes on California classics. Of the nearly two dozen wines we make every year, blends and flavors change but our desire to share the simple pleasures of natural wine remains the same.

What is your favorite forgotten grape? Nero d’Avola

What was your first experience with a forgotten grape? My first experience with wine was actually with forgotten grapes. I went to work on a farm in Italy, just outside of Siena, when I graduated college. They assigned me as a intern in the vineyard and olive orchard. There was an old vine block of mixed whites and reds that I loved—all quite literally forgotten—none of the locals even knew what they were, but they made delicious wine.

What do you love most about the forgotten grapes? I don’t just love forgotten grapes—I love forgotten apple varieties, heritage breed animals, heirloom vegetables, and forgotten crafts—in a modern world where shelf life, yield, and the lowest price at all costs reign supreme, we miss out on so many flavors, nutrients, and experiences.

Flavors were bold and smooth and we both instantly agreed it was our new favorite. It wasn’t just about the wine but also the moment and creating a lasting memory.

What is your favorite forgotten grape? Torrontés and Counoise

What was your first experience with a forgotten grape? Our first foray into Torrontés was a bit of a harvest gamble… We took a chance on trying a new varietal that, not only had we not tried before, but had never even heard of. With only a week’s notice to when the grapes would be harvested, we bought as many bottles of Torrontés as we could find (in the name of research, of course) and started reading up on the grape. With a lot of excitement and only a hint of trepidation, we jumped in a week later and brought in the grapes. That was in 2019, and we haven’t looked back since!

What do you love most about the forgotten grapes? There’s something truly momentous about watching someone taste a wine that’s completely unfamiliar to them. It’s a moment of discovery… a moment of unbridled fascination… a moment of curiosity. That introduction to something new opens a whole new world – not just of wine, but of places and of people. For me (and our team at Omega Road), the beauty of Forgotten Grapes is that they allow our community to expand their palates while expanding their minds. Besides, who doesn’t love getting to be the first to tell their friends about the best new wine they’ve never tried?

Orange Boots Wine

330 Zachary St, Unit 108, Moorpark, Ca 93021

Orangebootswine.com

Region: Ventura County

Owner: Felecia Hodges

Winemaker: Felecia Hodges

About: What started in 2009 as a home-winemaking endeavor with the possibility of moving to South Africa and becoming involved in the wine industry has gradually grown into Orange Boots Wine. Felecia is a Los Angeles-based winemaker crafting 100% hands-on, small batch, minimum intervention, or as she prefers to label them “Personal” California wines. Orange Boots Wine focuses on obscure varietals, such as Tannat, Negroamaro, Aglianico, Arneis and others sourced from vineyards in Santa Barbara, Paso Robles, and as far north as Mendocino. The name Orange Boots refers to Felecia’s orange Hunter boots that are worn when she’s in the winery, vineyards and out and about… There’s always more to the story, enquire when you’re tasting at her space.

What is your favorite forgotten grape? Tannat

What was your first experience with a forgotten grape? As a home winemaker, I decided to venture from Merlot to Sangiovese and Malbec. I was mesmerized at their complexity and finish. Most importantly I was pleased that I was able to create two amazing wines that rendered the applause from a few wine professionals.

What do you love most about the forgotten grapes? For the winemaker, the grape does not allow complacency, you need to have a plan. For the public, they don’t know what they’re getting, however they do know it will not fall within the lines of mediocrity and normalcy. I love ones’ expression when tasting a forgotten grape for the first time.

Pali Wine Co.

1036 W. Aviation Drive. Lompoc, CA, 93436
https://paliwineco.com/

Region: Santa Barbara County

Owner: Tim Perr

Winemaker: Aaron Walker

About: Bringing the California Central Coast to your neighborhood. Founded in 2005 with the intent to produce Burgundy-inspired wines from California’s Central Coast, Pali Wine Co. now consists of three brands with distinct focuses. The original Pali brand focuses on premium Pinot Noir and Chardonnay sourced primarily from Pali’s own Sta. Rita Hills and Sonoma vineyards. Tower 15 Winery produces extremely small bottlings of opportunistic, single varietal wines with grapes purchased from small, family-owned vineyards in California’s Central Coast. And Neighborhood Winery specializes in interesting blends – both daring and traditional – that often push the boundaries of conventional wine flavor profiles. All wines are meticulously crafted at Pali’s Lompoc-based winery under the direction of its long-time winemaker, Aaron Walker.

What is your favorite forgotten grape? A few favorites: Cabernet Pfeffer, Dornfelder, and Orange Muscat.

What was your first experience with a forgotten grape? We first experimented with Dornfelder when sourcing from our neighbors, Huber Vineyard. Our 2015 vintage was extremely dark in color with a surprisingly light, acid-driven frame. Nearly 10 years later, we planted Dornfelder on our estate property and are producing varietals under Pali Wine Co. and Neighborhood Winery, experimenting with our winemaking for this stunning grape!

On another note, we were privileged to begin sourcing from Enz Vineyard in 2022. We now source Cabernet Pfeffer, Zinfandel, Orange Muscat, and ancient-vine Mourvèdre from their property. We love the opportunity to highlight terroir in each of our wines, whether it’s skin-contact Orange Muscat or carbonic macerated Cab Pfeffer!

What do you love most about the forgotten grapes? Sharing with our guests and wine club members across our tasting rooms!

What is your favorite forgotten grape? Gringet

What was your first experience with a forgotten grape? A difficult question to answer, by nature I’m drawn to the road less traveled, or in this case wine grapes obscured from popular enjoyment over time. In my earliest days exploring wine grapes I had a keen interest in lesser-known varieties. Gringet really piqued my interest then, and I’m still fascinated by it today. So much so that I’ve planted it in my vineyards along the California Central Coast in Cambria and San Simeon. When I taste Gringet it takes me back to my visits to the Savoie, where for literally centuries Gringet was misunderstood to be a Traminer variant. It wasn’t until the advent of DNA testing that we were able to confirm our suspicions that Gringet is a distinct variety, with very unique properties.

What do you love most about the forgotten grapes? In North America, maybe not my first experience, but definitely the most interesting. Forgotten grapes aren’t one single variety, it’s really more about a region and the varieties grown there. Specifically, the historic vineyards of Los Angeles, the Cucamonga Valley, and the Native American lands of the Pachanga. Most of which were largely ignored and abandoned in the late 1800’s and early 20th century. My good friend Abe Schoener and I have slowly discovered small patches of these vineyards still surviving wildly for over a hundred years. We’re on a journey to discover more varieties there including Palomino, Alicante Bouschet, Mission/Pais, and a couple of others still hiding somewhere out there.
